Meet Mae Webster our summer intern!

Mae Webster

Hello! My name is Mae Webster and I am a rising sophomore at Wofford College. I am a part of the Bonner Scholar program at Wofford, which means that I will volunteer for four years with various non-profit organizations to complete hundreds of service hours.

This year I was lucky enough to get a position with the Spartanburg Science Center! I was in search of a volunteer position in which I could work with animals, due to my plans of pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, as well as help a community in need of assistance. Thankfully, Mary Levens and Jessica Kusher welcomed me with open arms!

My main task at the center is to take care of the animals and make sure that they are fed and looked after every day. When I come into the center I go around and feed each of the animals and then spend time holding them and getting them used to human interaction. One of the best parts of the day is giving Scrappy the bearded dragon his daily shower!

My current project is to clean out a turtle tank and transfer the box turtle into the freshly cleaned tank. I also just finished organizing many cabinets in the animal room as well as preparing fruit fly cultures for our dart frogs!

Not only do I have the opportunity to work with the animals, but I also have the chance to help with the summer camps. Last week I helped with our in-person camp and was amazed by the children’s reactions to seeing people in person again. Although the kids were wearing masks and were spread out, they had the best time talking to one another and bouncing ideas back and forth. I had the best time with the kids and it was nice to see an in-person camp work so smoothly. I have always wanted to be a camp counselor and this was an amazing experience. I grew very close with a camper named Sterling. I got to watch Sterling learn and grow over the course of the week and it was inspiring to see a young girl so interested in science. I am so thankful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to see what else I can accomplish at the science center!
